The History of CVAC

For over 45 years Carmel Valley Athletic Club, originally known as Carmel Valley Racquet Club, has prided itself on its active community of members. Founded in 1968 by tennis enthusiast and country club owner, Peter Paxton, CVAC quickly became a cornerstone of the small community enticing professional, celebrity, and amateur tennis player alike to the quaint tennis club just beyond the fog line. Initially skeptical about expanding his reach into the Carmel area, he eventually warmed to the idea after several conversations with enthusiastic Carmel locals and exceedingly temperate weather. His first task was to find the perfect location for his new club. This was done through the rigorous and time-consuming process of sitting on a log in the sun for hours on end in different locations. After spending the day at the current location of CVAC he chose it to be his future club. Its moderate temperatures, proximity to the ocean, and sunny disposition made it the perfect location for outdoor athletics, particularly tennis.

CVAC was the tennis club to join at the height of the tennis boom and drew visitors from across the country. In 1976 he sold the club to Dennis & Jan Shepard who updated the clubs fitness facilities. In 2004 Scot & Heidi McKay purchased Carmel Valley Athletic Club from the Shepards and transformed it from a tennis-focused facility to the diverse and community driven athletic club that you see today. The current ownership worked to bring CVAC back to it's original splendor over the last decade. In this endeavor, CVAC has expanded their offerings from strength & cardio equipment, swimming and tennis to include over 80 group exercise classes each week, private and group Pilates instruction, and preferred member pricing to Refuge, an award-winning relaxation spa adjacent to the club. In addition to their physical fitness line up, CVAC offers a series of programs that benefit local non-profits, like their annual Turkey Trot for the Food Bank of Monterey County and their Party in Pink for the Breast Cancer Assistance Group of Monterey County. The CVAC calendar is filled with tennis mixers, weekend drop-in tennis, holiday parties, health seminars, fitness challenges, and kids programs. We also have monthly staples such as Wine Tasting and Poker Night where members can be found building new relationships and rekindling old ones. CVAC is not just an athletic club, it is a community.

Here are a few members who have been with us from the beginning. They can be found playing Bridge in the club lobby or moving to the beat in Aqua Aerobics class.
